Things That Summer Brings is the first release by Pop Vocal artist Derrek Wayne. Just like singer songwriters Eliot Smith and Emitt Rhodes, Derrek Wayne plays every instrument on his album - layering guitar, bass and drums over piano and vocals. No computers were used until the mastering process, the album was recorded on a four track reel to reel in a home studio in Eugene Oregon.
This album demonstrates Wayne's range, not only as a composer and arranger, but also as a performer. Dusty piano waltz, Beatlesesque pop, finger picked guitar tone poem, and heavy rock are just some of the styles collected here. Contrasted against these more contemporary songs are standards of Broadway and Folk which Wayne lifted from the Sammy Davis Jr. catalogue, as well as a George Gershwin Prelude.
With such diverse debut material, one wonders where Wayne developed a style which owes as much to Broadway as it does to Rock. It may surprise you to know that the answer is Barbershop Quartet harmony, which Wayne has been singing since he was a teenager. |
